Coraline - Neil Gaiman
Coraline is a creepy fairy tale about a brave little girl who rescues herself and her parents from the clutches of an evil ‘other’ mother and father in the alternate universe she discovers through the door in the drawing room. Relying on her smarts and general unflappability, Coraline triumphs after a tense and horrific race that had me thoroughly unsettled by the end. Gaiman infuses the story with a sense of dream-like otherworldliness combined with an underpinning of sinister danger that works perfectly, this is not the kind of book to read before bed!
